Unlike other rugged notebooks, which have severe military-style coarse exteriors, the Panasonic Toughbook F8 is designed to endure rough handling with some panache. This 3.7-pound lightweight notebook has a stylish magnesium alloy chassis that can bear weights of up to 100 kilograms. The keyboard is spill-resistance, liquids splattered on the keyboard will trickle out the spell-over drainage system located at the bottom of the notebook. Also it is designed to handle repeated falls from a three-foot height. Though the Panasonic Toughbook is meant to business professionals on the go, it is a fitting choice for anyone who enjoys the rough outdoors. It has a 4.1inch LCD screen, a 2.26 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo processor, 2GB of RAM, a 250GB hard drive and comes with Microsoft Window Vista. The Panasonic Toughbook F8 also includes a built-in optical drive. The Li-ion battery provides the excellent backup power time of approximately six hours. Though it doesn’t include a webcam, it sports three USB ports, a PC card slot, a SDHC flash card reader and other peripherals.

I think it's going to be interesting to see how the new breed of ultralight laptops, netbooks and tablets develop as people take them out and about in the world. Tablets especially have a lot of ruggedness potential as they have no moving parts or keys to break off, and could easily be designed (if the glass touch surface is made shatterproof) to withstand the rigors of any environment, more easily than folding notebooks.
